Tata Tiago/Tigor

4 Stars (12.52 points)

The new Tata Tiago and the Tata Tigor scored a 4-star safety rating after scoring a total of 12.52 points out of a maximum of 17 points in adult occupancy. The car however scored three stars in the child occupancy after storing a total of 34.15 points out of 49 points. The tests were conducted at the speeds of 64 kmph and the body shell was rated as unstable and not capable of withstanding further loading with a particular mention of the front footwell area. On the safety front, both cars are offered with dual-front airbags, ABS with EBD, front seat-belt pre-tensioners, and rear parking sensors as standard.

Mahindra Thar

4 Stars (12.52 points)

Currently, in its second gen, the Mahindra Thar is currently not only one of the most capable off-roaders in India but also impressed us with its strong and safe package for buyers. The SUV scored a total of 12.52 points in adult occupancy while the maximum child occupancy scores stand at 41.11 points. This helped the car score four stars in the NCAP safety crash tests. The Thar was also subjected to the side impact crash test which it passed with flying colours. For those wondering, the new Thar gets dual airbags, ABS, rear parking sensors and even a roll cage as standard, with the fully-loaded model also packing in ESP.

Mahindra Marazzo

4 Star (12.85 points)

The new Mahindra Marazzo was the first made-in-India MPV to score a 4-star safety rating and scored 12.85 points out of 17 in adult occupancy. It is one of the strongest rivals in the segment and gives tough competition to the rivals like the Kia Caren and the Hyundai Alcazar. The child occupancy ratings on the other hand stand at a 2-star rating or 22.22 points out of 49 units. Features like dual-front airbags, ABS, a driver’s side seat belt reminder, front seat belt pre-tensioners and ISOFIX anchorages for the rear seats are offered as a standard part of the package.

Toyota Urban Cruiser

4 Star (13.52 points)

The new Toyota Urban Cruiser takes on the rivals like the Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet, Tata Nexon, Mahindra XUV300, and the Nissan Magnite. Based on the previous-gen Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, the new Urban Cruiser got a four-star rating for adult protection after scoring 13.52 points out of a maximum of 17. The child protection score stands at 36.68 points out of 49. The body shell was rated stable and was capable of withstanding further loadings. The protection for the driver’s knees, and passenger’s right knee however was marginal as they are prone to have an impact with the structure behind the dashboard. The standard safety features include dual-front airbags, front seat belt pre-tensioners and reminders, ISOFIX anchorages and ABS with EBD.

Honda Jazz

4 Stars (13.89 points)

The present gen of the Honda Jazz was introduced in 2015 and is one of the oldest yet practical offerings in the segment. The hatchback scored a 4-star rating in the tests conducted by GNCAP after securing 13.89 points out of 17 for adult occupant protection. The body shell was rated stable and capable of withstanding further loads. The front occupant knee protection is not as great due to a potential impact with ‘dangerous structures behind the dashboard. Furthermore, the lack of ISOFIX mounting points and limited protection on both child seats impacted the child protection ratings and the car only got three stars after securing 31.54 points out of 49 points.

Mahindra XUV700

5 Stars (16.03 points)

The Mahindra XUV700 continues to be in popular demand in the country and is currently the safest three-row SUV in the Indian market. The XUV700 scored five out of five stars in the GNCAP tests and secured 16.03 points out of 17 points for adult occupant protection. The body shell was rated stable and the car scored 41.66 points out of 49 for child occupant protection. While the SUV boasts an extensive standard safety features list, those opting for the range-topping versions will also get features like dual-front airbags, front seat belt pre-tensioners and reminders, ISOFIX anchorages and ABS

Tata Nexon

5 Stars (16.06 points)

The Tata Nexon is currently one of the safest cars in the Indian market and takes on the rivals like the Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet, Tata Nexon, Nissan Magnite, Maruti Brezza and other sub-4m cars. The SUV scored a 5-star rating after securing 16.06 points out of 17 in adult occupant protection. The child occupant protection however was only 25 out of 49. On the plus side, it also passed the GNCAP’s side impact test, meeting UN95 side-impact protection requirements.

Tata Altroz

5 Stars (16.13 points)

The Tata Altroz takes on the rivals like the Hyundai i20, Maruti Baleno and Toyota Glanza in the Indian market and is currently the safest premium hatchback in the country. Based on Tata’s Alpha platform, the new Altroz scored a perfect five star rating after getting 16.13 points out of 17 points in adult occupant protection. The child occupant ratings on the other hand stand at 29 out of 49 points. It also passed the side impact crash side impact tests conducted by GNCAP. Standard safety kit across the Altroz range includes two airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors, seat belt reminders for the front seats and ISOFIX child seat mounts. The higher variants on the other hand get height-adjustable front seat belts, a rear parking camera, and front and rear fog lamps.

Mahindra XUV300

5 Stars (16.42 points)

The new Mahindra XUV300 scored a total of 16.42 points out of 17 points which helped it get a perfect five-star rating. In addition to this, it also scored 37.44 points int he child occupant protection while the SUV showed the lowest level of intrusion during the side impact crash test. It also gets standard features like two airbags, ABS with EBD, and rear parking sensors while the range-topping versions on the other hand are offered with six airbags, front parking sensors, ESC, a tyre pressure monitoring system and rear parking camera. It also gets a seat belt reminder for all passengers and disc brakes at all four corners.

Tata Punch

5 Star (16.45 points)

The new Tata Punch is currently the safest car in the market and is based on the same Alpha platform as the Tata Altroz. It scored 16.45 points out of 17 points in adult occupant protection while child occupant protection stands at 40.89 points out of 49 points. Needless to say, the new Tata Punch also passed a side impact crash test with flying colours. The standard safety features list comprises of features like airbags, ABS, front seat belt reminders, rear parking sensors and ISOFIX child seat anchors.
