Here is the procedure for scrapping a vehicle in India.

Step one: Make contact with the scrapyard.

• Contact the authorized recycler by phone or on their websites.
• Once you’ve received the appointment, you can either drive the automobile to the scrapyard or have them come to you. Please keep in mind that there may be towing costs if you request that they collect your vehicle.

Step 2: Finish the paperwork.

• A copy of the car owner’s Permanent Account Number.
• The vehicle’s original registration certificate.
• The Automated Testing Station issued an End-of-Life Vehicle certificate.
• The check was cancelled.
• If the car owner is unavailable to submit the vehicle to the Automated Testing Station, a letter of authorization on stamp paper is required for the authorized person.
• Identity evidence (passport, driving licence, Aadhaar, voter card, or picture identity card issued by the State Government or the Central Government).
• Address proof (electricity bill, water bill, landline telephone bill, piped gas bill, etc.) of the vehicle owner
• A digital image of the car owner or an authorized person holding the ELV is required.
• An agreement from the vehicle owner stating that all information provided is truthful and correct to the best of their knowledge.

Step 3: Allow the scrappage to begin.

• Typically, the recycler will remove the tyres, batteries, and CNG kit (if any). The air-conditioning unit’s refrigerant is drained and delivered to the de-pollution station. All liquids are emptied, including engine oil, gearbox oil, petrol, brake fluid, steering fluid, windshield washer fluid, and engine coolant. The recycler removes the vehicle’s exhaust system and fuel tank.
• The body panels, boot lid, bonnet, fenders, doors, headlights, and bumpers are physically removed once all fluids have been removed from the vehicle. The steering wheel, seats, floor mats, dashboard, roof lining, and other interior components are removed by hand. The vehicle’s electrical system is also dismantled.
• The vehicle’s running gear is removed, the car is raised, and the engine, brakes, and suspension are removed. The VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) plate is then removed.

Step 4: The leftover car components are recycled or utilized.

• Only the body shell remains after all automotive components have been removed.
• A crane lifts the car’s body shell and drops it into a crusher facility. The crusher produces a steel bale, which is sold for smelting.
• The remaining pieces will either be sold or scrapped into a steel bale.
• To avoid pollution of the environment, the recycler guarantees that no AC fumes or oil are released into the air or the soil.

Step 5: Obtain the certificate of scrappage.

• The recycler will provide a ‘certificate of destruction after the automobile has been demolished.
• The certificate can be used to have the vehicle de-registered at the appropriate Regional Transport Office (RTO). The scrap value will be given to you in a check or electronically.
• Aside from being used for de-registration, the certificate may also be used to obtain a discount from the car manufacturer on the purchase of your next vehicle and a reduction on road tax and total remission of vehicle registration payments.
