Hindustan Motors To Return To India Soon - Details

Hindustan Motors is currently one of the most iconic automotive brands in the country and is expected to soon make a comeback as an electric vehicle maker

Hindustan Motors recently confirmed its plan to make a return to the Indian market but this time as an electric vehicle manufacturer. The brand will soon be launching multiple new electric two-wheelers in India while we might also see a couple of electric vehicles being introduced in the brand’s line-up. HM is currently said to be in talks with a European company and here are all the details you should know about the upcoming Hindustan Motors electric vehicles in India.

Hindustan Motors To Return To India

Hindustan Motors rose to fame with the success of the Ambassador car that was on sale in the country till March 2014. The Ambassador was manufactured at the brand’s Uttarpara manufacturing facility and is still appreciated for its strong reliability and extremely comfortable ride quality.

Having said this, HM is currently owned by C K Birla and is expected to soon announce a joint venture with a European company. Once in a JV, both the brands will be working together and will be launching multiple new electric two-wheelers in India to take on the rivals like the Ather, Ola, Simple Electric, Okinawa, and other EV makers in the country.

Both brands will invest a total sum of around Rs 600 crore for the electric two-wheeler project. HM however is yet to announce the name of this European company. From what we know so far, more than one electric scooter will be launched in the country in the initial phase. In addition to this, the brand might also launch a new Hindustan Motors electric car in the Indian market in next few years if the electric two-wheeler project succeeds in the country.

“The due diligence between HM and the European company is now complete. The name of the foreign partner will be announced shortly,” the official said.

Both brands will soon be finalising the technical aspects of the joint venture and will be officially restarting the manufacturing facility located in Uttarpara, near Kolkata, in West Bengal. More than 2500 employees were working in the plant in 2014 before the operations were ceased by the brand.

The official launch date or the launch price of the new electric scooters however are yet to be shared by Hindustan Motors but it is likely that it will be launching its new electric two-wheeler in late 2023 or early 2024 in the Indian market. Once launched, the new scooters are likely to compete in different price segments and will offer a well-built and practical package for buyers looking for an affordable and cheap-to-run electric scooter in the Indian market.
