3 New Upcoming Off-Road SUVs in India

Off-road SUVs and lifestyle vehicles currently have a strong demand in the market and many brands including Maruti and Mahindra will soon be launching new off-road SUVs in India

With off-road SUVs now becoming more practical and VFM, the customer base for such SUVs is growing at a rapid rate. These SUVs not only offer strong looks, commendable capabilities and powerful engine options but also boast a comfortable and practical cabin. The demand for such SUVs is rocketing through the sky right now and many new brands will soon be launching new 4X4 SUVs in the country. If you are also considering buying a new SUV soon, here is a list of the top 3 new upcoming off-road SUVs you should watch out for.

Upcoming Off-Road 4X4 SUVs In India

Maruti Jimny

The new Jimny is likely to be unveiled at the upcoming Auto Expo 2022 and will challenge the rivals like the Mahindra Thar and the Force Gurkha in the Indian market. The new Jimny, unlike the global version, will boast a 5-door layout and will be thus longer. From what we know so far, it will be offered in two seating configurations – 5 seats and 7 seats (optional). The exterior styling of the India-spec model will be more or less similar to the global iteration and will be dominated by large round headlamps at the front, a boxy side profile and a rather simple rear design. It will also get large alloy wheels, black body cladding, body-coloured door handles, and more. Inside, you will continue to see a similar dashboard layout with features like a large 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, the latest smartphone connectivity features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, USB charging ports, steering mounted controls, rear AC vents, and automatic climate control. Powering the new Jimny will be the same 1.5L K15 petrol engine that we get with the Brezza and the Ciaz. This engine churns out a peak power and torque output of 100 bhp and 130 Nm respectively. Likewise, it is likely to be offered with a 5-speed manual gearbox while an optional 6-speed AT gearbox might also be on offer. Needless to say, the power will be channelled to all four wheels via a 4×4 drivetrain setup with a low-range transfer case.

5-Door Force Gurkha

The Force Gurkha is one of the most capable SUVs in the country and gives tough competition to the rivals like the Thar in the country. The brand will soon be launching the new Gurkha 5-door in the country for buyers looking for a practical and powerful SUV. The new Gurkha 5-door is likely to get multiple seating configurations including a six-seater variant that will offer captain chairs in the second and the third row. Needless to say, the new Gurkha 5-door will be larger in size and will continue to be powered by the same 2.6L turbo diesel engine that churns out a peak power output of 91 bhp while the maximum torque output stands at 250 Nm. This engine is only offered with a 5-speed manual gearbox and channels power to all four wheels. It also offers mechanically lockable front and rear differentials. The Gurkha 5-door will offer a similar package as the 3-door iteration and will soon make its Indian debut. Having said this, the new Force Gurkha 5-door is expected to be around Rs 2 lakh more expensive than the three-door version.

Mahindra Thar 5-Door

Ever since its launch, the Mahindra Thar continues to be one of the most popular SUVs in the country and is one of the most affordable and capable 4X4 SUVs in the Indian market. The SUV still has over 5-6 months of  waiting period in the country depending on the variant you opt for. The brand will soon be launching the Thar 5-door in the country and test mules of the same were recently spotted in the country. From what we know so far, the upcoming Thar 5-door is likely to be offered with a single-pane sunroof in addition to a removable hard top. furthermore, the new Thar 5-door is expected to be underpinned by the same platform that underpins the new Scorpio-N. Reports suggest that the new Thar 5-door is likely to be offered with two seating configurations – 6-seater and 7-seater. On the features front, it is likely to be offered with a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone connectivity & navigation, an 8-way adjustable driver’s seat, steering mounted controls, multiple airbags, rear parking and others. Furthermore, it is expected to be offered with same engine options as the Thar 3-door – 2.0L Turbo petrol and 2.2L diesel engine. Both these engines will be offered with both manual as well as automatic gearbox options. The new Thar 5-door will challenge the rivals like the Maruti Jimny and the Force Gurkha 5-door in the Indian market. More details will soon be shared by the Indian carmaker.
